"Unstoppable" based on NW Ohio story

TOLEDO, OH You might remember the story: a train gets loose near Toledo and travels almost seventy miles without a single person on board. That story is now the plot for a major motion picture.

We didn't talk with Denzel Washington or Chris Pine, but we did talk with the three heroes of this story: Jess Knowlton, Terry Forson and Jon Hosfeld.

We talked about that day, how they managed to stop the train and what they think of the movie.

It all started at a CSX rail yard in Walbridge. The 47-car train got away and traveled unmanned for nearly 70 miles towards Kenton.

Forson said, "We had a little less than two miles to tie on and get it under control."

Knowlton told us, "It would have derailed, it would have torn that town up."

Sheriff's deputies tried to shoot the fuel cut-off valve. CSX officials attempted to derail the train. Nothing worked.

The men said they "didn't know anything about any of it. Just throw the rule book out the window and catch it."

Hosfeld says, "I was able to successfully mount it at 12-13 mph and shut the throttle off."

Together, these three stopped the train. It never derailed. No one was hurt.

They thought the story was finished.

Movie company 20th Century Fox contacted the three men about plans to make a movie based on their story.

Hosfeld hasn't seen the movie yet; Jesse and Terry have. They say the storyline is accurate and the characters mirror themselves.

These men say they're proud, not only to be part of the movie, but to be part of the story.

The production company did pay the men for their story. When we asked how much they got, Terry Forson laughed and said "I'm still working for the railroad."

The men were also invited out to Los Angeles for the premiere of the movie. "Unstoppable" was released nationwide today.
