Elizabeth Smart hired as ABC News commentator

LOS ANGELES

The now 23-year-old Smart was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City bedroom at knifepoint when she was 14. She was held captive for nine months by street preacher Brian David Mitchell.

During the five-week trial, Smart testified that she was forced to enter a polygamous marriage with Mitchell, endured near-daily rapes and was forced to use drugs and alcohol.

Mitchell, 56, was convicted in December on federal charges of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines for sex. He was sentenced in May to life in federal prison without parole.

Smart could be on the air within the next few weeks. A spokesman for Smart says she is committed to giving back through child advocacy work.

Financial details of Smart's deal with ABC have not been released.
