Fallen LA deputy honored with 101 Freeway dedication

LOS ANGELES

L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca and other guests will participate in a ceremony to dedicate a section of the Hollywood Freeway to County Deputy Sheriff /*Juan Escalante*/.

A sign will designate northbound Highway 101 near Mission Road, and southbound Highway 101 near Alameda Street as "Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Juan Abel Escalante Memorial Highway."

In August 2008, Escalante was confronted by armed gang members outside his home in Cypress Park as he was preparing to leave for work. When he identified himself as a deputy sheriff and drew his weapon, he was shot and killed.

Escalante is survived by his wife, three children, parents and two siblings.
