Malibu lagoon $8-million project postponed

MALIBU, Calif.

The $8-million restoration project was set to get under way on Friday. However, the start date was pushed back for reasons not immediately disclosed by project officials. Protestors against the work gathered near the site Friday morning, but it wasn't clear whether their presence was related to the delay.

The lagoon is located where the Pacific Ocean meets Surfrider Beach. Scientists say the lagoon is polluted and loads of sediment need to be removed. However, opponents claim the project will do more damage to the wetlands and flatten waves at Surfrider Beach.

It remains unclear when the project will get under way.
