Drinking black tea may help protect against Type 2 diabetes, according to data from more than 50 countries.

Researchers found the rate of diabetes was lowest in countries where people drank the most black tea.

Black tea drinking was highest in Ireland, the United Kingdom and Turkey.

Type 2 diabetes rates have skyrocketed worldwide in recent decades. Scientists say a lot more research is still needed.

The study was published in the journal, BMJ Open.
