Red Bull Flugtag record broken in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif.

A crowd of thousands of spectators went crazy for the Chicken Whisperers from San Francisco. Their craft flew 258 feet, breaking the previous Flugtag world record of 229 feet set last year during the event in Germany.

Twenty-nine teams participated in the event. The airships have to be human powered and are judged on distance, creativity and showmanship.

The Red Bull Flugtag began in 1992 in Vienna, Austria. This year was the first National Red Bull Flugtag, in which five cities across the U.S. competed on the same day, including Washington, D.C., Miami, Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth.
