Ventura County parolee fires at deputies, surrenders after brief standoff

CAMARILLO, Calif.

Ventura County Sheriff's investigators learned that Omar Ruiz, 26, of Santa Paula was staying in a residence on the 5300 block of Hollyridge Drive.

Authorities said Ruiz had been wanted on a parole violation since May 28 and was also considered a suspect in a Santa Paula homicide.

Investigators approached the residence around 2:15 p.m. after receiving information that Ruiz was in the area.

As deputies approached the home, a single gunshot was fired from inside the garage. The bullet missed four deputies. The suspect barricaded himself for a short while before walking out of the residence and surrendering.

Deputies entered the residence and found a 9-month-old child inside. That child has since been turned over to the mother.

A search warrant was later obtained for the home. Deputies located an assault rifle, two loaded high capacity magazines and body armor.

Ruiz was arrested for the outstanding parole warrant and turned over to Santa Paula police. Detectives anticipate arresting Ruiz on four counts of attempted murder on a police officer within the next week.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information was urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
