Baby gray whale spotted alone off Marina del Rey coast

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (KABC) -- Wildlife officials are concerned about a baby gray whale that has been spotted for several days alone off the coast of Marina del Rey.

Peter Wallerstein with Marine Animal Rescue said the 15-foot whale became beached at Dockweiler State Beach three days ago, but it was gone by the time he and other rescuers arrived.

Wallerstein said he last saw the whale on Monday in the north channel of the marina, which is where passersby captured video of the whale.

The whale was actually in the marina as far deep as Mother's Beach for three to four days. Wallerstein says it appears the baby whale may have been bottom-feeding.

The whale appears to have made its way out of the channel. Wallerstein believes it may have been spotted at Will Rogers Beach in the Pacific Palisades, where lifeguards reported seeing a gray whale Tuesday morning.

"It's moving in the right direction, which is a positive sign, but the reports were that it hit the jetty. It ran up against the jetty, then it went out and headed towards the beach in Bel-Air Club," Wallerstein said. "So we're concerned about these behaviors."

Wallerstein added that he cannot confirm that the whale spotted at Will Rogers Beach is the same gray whale in question, but he believes it likely is.

If you see the whale, you're advised not to approach it or pour water on it.
