Bernie Sanders says he has good shot at winning California

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders believes he has a good shot at taking California and the race before the Democratic Convention.

"It's a narrow path. Secretary Clinton did very, very well in the South. But we've been winning in all parts of the country," Sanders said. "I think we do have a path toward victory."

The senator said it's "absurd" that some are calling for him to drop out now.

"Why would you say to the people of California or New York state, 'You should not have a choice about who the Democratic nominee for president would be.' But from my perspective, we need the votes here," he said. "We think we can win this thing."

On Thursday, Sanders picked up the endorsement of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents about 50,000 workers along the West Coast.

The union of dock workers says Sanders was the best choice on issues such as trade, support for unions and fair wages. Sanders says the union is a "vital part of our movement, which is spreading to every corner of our country."

The endorsement comes ahead of Saturday's contests in Washington state, Hawaii and Alaska, where the union has a presence.

Sanders also expects to compete heavily in upcoming races in Oregon and California, where the union's membership is also based.
