AVALON, Calif. (KABC) -- Two people were rescued in unknown condition after a small plane crashed on Catalina Island Sunday afternoon.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna 172 went down just short the runway near the Airport in the Sky around 4:30 p.m. Authorities said the plane had departed from the Long Beach Airport.

Officials said a victim was expected to be hoisted and flown to Harbor UCLA Medical Center. At least one person was transported to a trauma center.

The identities of the victims were not yet known.

No further information was available as the investigation was ongoing.
