LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Actresses Christine Baranski and Tracey Ullman play quite the characters in Disney's latest movie "Into the Woods."

Baranski plays Cinderella's evil stepmother and Ullman is the mother of Jack, from "Jack and the Beanstalk." These two help make the complex music of Stephen Sondheim come alive in the movie.

"I trotted up Madison Avenue and auditioned for Rob Marshall...it's like to be a part of Sondheim, you got to be able to do Shakespeare and, you know, you've got to be able to interpret it," Ullman said. "It's not so much about having this incredible Broadway-style voice - it's about acting your way through it."

Baranski added that the music in "Into the Woods" will appeal to all audiences, especially children.

"Kids are very quick these days, and I think they're going to welcome a chance to prick up their ears and go, 'What is this about?' and listen to the lyrics," she said.

Both actresses consider the movie wonderfully original, but they are a little confused about Cinderella's feelings for her prince, who is played by actor Chris Pine.

"She turns down Chris Pine? She gets to marry him and realizes she'd rather be on her own and stuff like that?" Ullman said.

"I'll take him. I'll take him," Baranski said, jokingly.

"Into the Woods" is out in theaters nationwide.
