EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The California Highway Patrol took a grand theft auto suspect into custody after a chase and standoff on the northbound 710 Freeway in East L.A. on Tuesday.
The incident began on the surface streets of Pico Rivera. The suspect, who was driving a 2002 BMW, reportedly took off when sheriff's deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over. The deputies did not pursue the suspect. An air unit was called to keep watch on the vehicle until the suspect entered bumper-to-bumper traffic on the northbound 5 Freeway. The California Highway Patrol then took over.
Authorities were able to halt traffic and isolate the vehicle to a stop, but the driver eventually took off a second time.
The car lost a tire before coming to a stop on the northbound 710 Freeway near the 60 Freeway. The suspect exited the car, appeared to make an aggressive move toward CHP officers and bailed on foot. CHP officers deployed a taser gun in an attempt to stop the suspect before eventually taking the person into custody.
Lanes on the freeway were temporarily shut down. They have since reopened.
