HIGHLAND PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A traffic signal was installed on a deadly stretch of road in Highland Park Thursday afternoon.

The beacon was placed at N. Figueroa Street and Avenue 55. In recent years, at least three people have been killed on the road.

Students from Monte Vista Street Elementary school joined in the event by demonstrating how to walk across the street using the signal.

Safety improvements to the road include more time for pedestrians to cross in crosswalks and flashing lights.

In December, 17-year-old Andres Perez was hit and killed as he walked to school. Jose Luna was killed riding his bike along the same stretch of road in June 2015, and a third person was killed in 2014.
