SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- Fontana officers shot and killed an armed suspect in San Bernardino early Saturday, police officials said. A second suspect was arrested for attempted murder.

According to Sgt. Gary Robertson, an attempted murder shooting was reported in Fontana around 10:45 p.m. Friday. A 37-year-old man was shot in the upper torso, police said.

Police tracked a suspect to a residence in the 800 block of north Davidson Avenue in San Bernardino. Four officers were sent to watch the residence in an unmarked car, Robertson said.

Around 3:30 a.m., the officers were approached on foot by Antonio Valentino Ramirez, 35, and James Moala Kofu, 22. According to Robertson, Kofu pointed a sawed off small caliber rifle at the officers. The officers feared for their lives and shot at the suspects, Robertson said.

Kofu died at the scene. His weapon was located near his body, Robertson said.

Ramirez was uninjured and fled on foot. He was able to evade officers for two hours. Police eventually located Ramirez. He was arrested on attempted murder charges from the incidents in Fontana and San Bernardino, Robertson said.

No officers were hurt. It is unclear if the incidents are gang related.

The San Bernardino Police Department is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call San Bernardino police at (909) 841-5361, or (909) 384-5630.
