Former State Senator Roderick Wright to begin jail sentence Friday

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Former California State Senator Roderick Wright is expected to surrender to authorities in downtown L.A. Friday to begin serving his 90-day jail sentence for perjury and fraud.

The Democrat was convicted earlier this year on five counts of fraudulent voting, two counts of perjury and one count of filing a false declaration of candidacy.

Prosecutors say he lied to cover up the fact that he was living in Baldwin Hills, not the Inglewood district he was elected to represent.

He has been sentenced to 90 days in jail as part of his sentence.

He was also ordered to complete 1,500 hours of community service. He will be on probation for three years

Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy said he is no longer eligible to hold public office in California.

Wright said he moved into an Inglewood property so he could run in 2008 to represent the 25th Senate District, but jurors found he actually lived outside the district in Baldwin Hills.

Due to redistricting, Wright currently represents the 35th Senate District. In March, the California Senate voted to suspend him, along with senators Leland Yee and Ron Calderon. Despite the suspension, the senators still received their $95,291 annual salaries.

Wright resigned from office on Sept. 15.
