MISSION HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles Police Department's Mission Station and surrounding areas were evacuated as a precaution Sunday afternoon after a woman brought in a grenade she found in her garage.

A bomb squad responded to the station at 11121 North Sepulveda Boulevard in Mission Hills. The California Highway Patrol closed the Rinaldi Street off-ramp from the northbound 405 Freeway and issued a SigAlert.

It was "something a husband had that had passed away years ago. The first place they bring it to is the police station," LAPD Sgt. Wes Albin said.

Albin added that those who discover explosives in their home should never bring it to the police station.

"Leave it where it's at. Call us, call the fire department and we'll take care of it from where it's at," Albin said.

The grenade was rendered safe shortly before 3:15 p.m. Streets were reopened in the area.
