Canyon Fire burning near Lake Piru now 91% contained

PIRU, Calif. (KABC) -- A large brush fire that erupted near Lake Piru in Ventura County and spread into Los Angeles County continues to burn, though crews are making significant progress in containment.

The Canyon Fire erupted on August 7 in a remote area east of Lake Piru, spreading rapidly through the brush amid a heat wave for much of Southern California.

As of Monday, the blaze scorched 5,370 acres with 91% containment, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted.

Castaic High School closed Friday as Canyon Fire rages near campus

Castaic High School was closed Friday as the northeast perimeter of the massive Canyon Fire continued to burn near the campus.

The school at 31575 Valley Creek Road, about 2 miles west of the 5 Freeway, is in an area that is under an evacuation order due to the fire.

The first day of the fall semester is scheduled for Aug. 12, according to the school's calendar.

Although the fire zone has come dangerously close to the campus, no structures at the school have been reported damaged.

Whether Castaic High School would reopen on Monday was unclear.

The fire moved fast after erupting near Lake Piru in Ventura County, then spreading into Los Angeles County, prompting evacuation orders in the Val Verde area west of Castaic.

As of Friday morning, the blaze had grown to 4,856 acres with 0% containment

Structure explodes in flames during Canyon Fire, video shows

The Canyon Fire has burned a few thousand acres across Ventura and Los Angeles counties, but the scope of damage it will cause for residents in the area remains unclear.

One of the areas the flames spread toward is Halsey Canyon, but firefighters said they managed to keep the fire at bay, sparing homes in the neighborhood around Hidden Valley Court.

Canyon Fire triggers evacuation orders and warnings

As the Canyon Fire in Ventura County spread into Los Angeles County, it prompted evacuation orders and warnings for several areas.

Overnight, areas within the Val Verde zone were reduced from an evacuation order to a warning. Much of the area near Lake Piru is under an evacuation order, including the area near Telegraph Road.

Local emergency proclamation for Canyon Fire

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents the area and chairs the Board of Supervisors, issued a local emergency proclamation Thursday afternoon in response to the fire aimed at ensuring all resources are made available to fight the blaze.

Barger also urged residents in the area to heed evacuation orders.

"The Eaton Fire showed us how quickly devastation can strike,'' she said. "It is never worth risking your life, the lives of your loved ones and pets, or the safety of those working to protect you. Your safety is my top priority, and swift action saves lives.''
