
Torrance fire department aware of fire, reports no impact to city
The city of Torrance issued an alert on its X account, saying the fire department has been made aware of the fire at the refinery and that there's no impact to the city.
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (KABC) -- Crews extinguished a massive fire that erupted at a Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, which sent up large flames and plumes of smoke into the air.
The fire broke out around 9 p.m. Thursday and could be seen for miles across the South Bay. Officials said there was no threat to the public.
"All refinery personnel and contractors have been accounted for and there are no injuries," Allison Cook, a Chevron spokesperson, said in a statement.
The refinery is the largest oil-producing site on the West Coast, and it isn't the first explosion it has seen.
It was not immediately clear what caused Thursday's blaze.

According to the Alert South Bay Regional Alert and Warning Notification System, which provides alerts to 15 South Bay Cities, no evacuation orders have been issued as the firefight continues but residents have been asked to stay indoors.

AIR7 was overhead as towering flames and billowing smoke filled up the sky in El Segundo. Several Eyewitness News viewers in nearby communities reported hearing a blast around 9:30 p.m.
