LAPD SWAT officers donate blood to supervisor's daughter, Children's Hospital Los Angeles

HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officers responded to a different call of duty Friday - donating blood to help their supervisor's daughter and patients at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

At first, it started with a few officers showing up at CHLA. They gave blood for SWAT supervisor Tim Colomy's 17-year-old daughter, Cassidy.

The high school running star is about to undergo a spinal fusion surgery next week to treat a severe case of scoliosis.

"She's a tough girl. She's always been my tomboy, and I'm looking forward to seeing her run again this season," her father said.

The number of donors eventually grew and dozens signed up - so many that the hospital could not schedule them all in one day.

Cassidy, who is overwhelmed by the turnout, said her father is her hero.

"Since day one I've always looked up to him and wanted to be like him. He does everything for me and my family, and it's just amazing to know that now he'll be a part of saving my life," she said.

But the blood drive isn't just for Cassidy now. The hospital needs blood for all of its patients because most donors take time off during the summer months.

SWAT team members also met with young patients, even making them honorary team members for showing courage and strength.

"They're saving lives - not only on the job, but off the job, too," Cassidy said.
