MONROVIA, Calif. (KABC) -- A family of bears were spotted enjoying the backyard of a Monrovia home on Friday.

The bears, a mama bear and two cubs, were about 50 feet up a tree, apparently just hanging out.

Residents say the bears come down regularly from a nearby canyon where they live.

"They like to go through the neighbor's yard, eat a lot of fruit. They check the fruit trees here, they come get water out of the fountain and wander around," said Kate Clark of Monrovia. "Sometimes they go up the trees and take a nap."

Clark said she leaves the side gate open when they're around so the cubs can easily get out.

State Fish and Game officials were not called because the bears were not threatening anyone.
