After a British mother claimed to have discovered an unwelcome stranger inside a can of tuna last week, she and Twitter users are now trying figure out what it could possibly be.

Zoe Butler, 28, of England told Nottingham Post that she opened a can of Princes tuna and was shocked to find tiny black eyes staring at her.

"I opened the top of the lid and saw a purply thing, a gut sack or intestine - then I turned it round and pushed it with a fork and saw it looking back at me," Butler told Nottingham Post.

"It's got like a spiny tail along the bottom - it's quite grim."

"I dropped the fork, jumped back, screamed a bit and shouted for my nan to come and have a look."

Butler's grandmother, Susan Goddard said, "It's a little red and has eyes, bright black, looking at you. We did manage to ascertain that it was dead."

After sharing the images of the creature on Twitter, many amateur sleuths offered their opinions on what the creature might be:

Butler sent photos of the creature inside the can to Princes, and said that she is not seeking any compensation, including a lifetime supply of the tuna.

Despite sharing on Twitter, Butler hasn't yet shared the discovery with her children because they fear they "might get put off" from eating tuna.

"I just want to find out what it is and to make sure it doesn't happen to somebody else," she told Nottingham Post.

Princes has apologized to Butler and said it is investigating the issue. According to a tweet from Butler, the can is undergoing laboratory inspection.
