Man critical after being shot in head in Vermont Square, LAPD says; assailant at large

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man was in critical condition after being shot in the head Wednesday morning in the Vermont Square neighborhood of South L.A., authorities said.

The shooting was reported at 3 a.m. in the area of 42nd and Flower streets, said a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department's Southwest Division. A Flower Street overpass crosses the 110 Freeway at the scene.

Officers arrived to find a man in his 40s suffering from a single gunshot wound, according to the LAPD. He was transported to California Hospital Medical Center.

A homeless encampment was seen on the overpass, but it was unclear if the victim himself was homeless.
