MONTEBELLO, Calif. (KABC) -- A homicide investigation is underway in Montebello after a man was gunned down while driving on Wednesday.

According to detectives, the driver of a red sedan drove for about two to three blocks from where the shots were fired, before hitting a stop sign and then crashing into a telephone pole near Sycamore and South Spruce streets around 4:42 p.m.

"Neighbors in the area heard gunshots. After the gunshots, they saw the vehicle traveling on Sycamore Street westbound, somewhat erratic," said Lt. Eddie Hernandez with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Two bullet holes were visible on the passenger-side window and one bullet hole was seen on the front windshield. The driver, a man who appeared to be about 25 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter remains at large. Investigators are working to determine if the shooting was gang-related. They say it's unclear if the shooter fired the deadly shots from another vehicle.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
