WALNUT PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man was killed in a deputy-involved shooting in the unincorporated Walnut Park area Thursday after failing to pull over for a traffic stop and leading deputies on a foot pursuit.

The suspect sped off when Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on Thursday. Deputies later found the car crashed in an alleyway and that the man and woman inside had fled on foot. Further investigation revealed that the car had been stolen.

Witnesses told deputies the male suspect had a handgun and pointed them in the direction of the suspects, sheriff's officials said.

A containment was placed around the area to search for the suspects. While fleeing from deputies, the male suspect broke into two homes and stole various items, deputies said.

Deputies quickly located the man, but when deputies tried to contact him, he turned around with his hands in his waistband, which resulted in the fatal shooting in the 2400 block of Flower Street, between Santa Fe Avenue and Pacific Boulevard, at about 6:40 p.m.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was found and taken into custody.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.

An investigation was ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau Lt. Coleman at (323) 890-5500.
