LINCOLN HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An officer-involved shooting occurred in Lincoln Heights near the USC Health Sciences campus, police said.

A suspect is in custody after the incident.

The shooting was reported in the 2000 block of Marengo Street around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the shooting happened after the suspect, who was already in custody for an prior incident Tuesday, broke free from officers and tried to steal a car off the street.

The earlier incident involved a call to the 5200 block of Ithaca Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Officers say they saw a man in a doorway holding a knife to a woman's throat. As officers began closing off the scene, the woman was able to break free and run out of the building.

After some negotiations with the man, LAPD officers were able to take him into custody.

That same man was being brought to the USC medical center for some testing Wednesday when he broke free from custody, police said.

He tried to commandeer a vehicle, pulling out a woman from behind the wheel. Officers chased and one fired at the man.

He was given medical treatment and was listed in stable condition. No officers or bystanders were injured.
