RIALTO, Calif. (KABC) -- A Rialto police officer responding to a call struck a pedestrian, who was rushed to a hospital.

The condition of the man hit by the police cruiser was not immediately known. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday near Cactus Avenue and Rosewood Street. There is no crosswalk at the intersection.

Following the accident, the back roof of the squad car was completely dented. That's where the man landed after being hit.

A witness said he believes the officer involved was traveling too fast.

"I heard the cop going really fast, and I looked up, that's when I seen the guy get hit, and that guy flew about 12 feet in the air and did about three somersaults. He landed on the back of the cop car and fell off," said the witness, who wished to remain anonymous.

The officer behind the wheel of the cruiser was not injured. The California Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation team is handling the investigation.
