Unveiled renderings of potential LA venues for 2024 Olympics

EXPOSITION PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles's bid committee for the 2024 Olympics unveiled renderings of potential aquatic and track and field venues in the city.

On Friday, it was a first look at plans for turning the L.A. Memorial Coliseum into a venue for world-class track and field competition. The iconic stadium hosted the Olympic Games in 1932 and 1984, and L.A. officials hope to light the Olympic flame at the coliseum again in 2024.

"So many of the athletes who were here for 1984, and had great experiences in the coliseum for 1984, tell us how enthusiastic they are to do it again, including a number of athletes who are, actually, today, members of the International Olympic Committee," said Gene Sykes, CEO of the LA 2024 committee.

University of Southern California has already committed to spending $270 million to modernize the stadium - home to the Trojans football team and the L.A. Rams. L.A. 2024 said architects and engineers have come up with cutting-edge techniques to prepare the facility for the Olympics.

"What we're going to do with the coliseum is transform it from a football stadium, where it's sort of been in a football-stadium condition for some time, to the athletics track-and-field stadium," Sykes added.

Renderings released featured designs for a state-of-the-art temporary aquatics facility that would transform USC's Dedeau Field, home of the university's baseball team, into an open-air swimming venue.
