WHITTIER, Calif. (KABC) -- A gruesome discovery was made in unincorporated Whittier after a woman's body was found in a car on Sunday.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the woman's body was found near the 8600 Block of Bradwell Avenue at about 1:15 p.m.

The woman was located in the rear of a 1991 Toyota Celica, according to authorities.

"As they approached the vehicle they could detect or smell a foul odor, which is indicative of decomposition of the body. They checked the vehicle and found a female Hispanic approximately 20, 25 years old," Lt. Dave Coleman of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said.

The woman, who was found in a large container, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Toyota she was found in was reported stolen, according to officials.

Neighbors told ABC7 they saw the car parked near Bradwell Avenue for about one week.

Homicide detectives with the sheriff's department are investigating the woman's death.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office is working to determine the woman's cause of death.
