ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was taken into custody without incident Monday morning after a prolonged standoff that followed a shooting on a residential street in Anaheim, authorities said.

The incident began about 2:45 a.m. when the resident exited his home and opened fire on a driver who was performing "donut" maneuvers in the 700 block of Olive Street, according to the Anaheim Police Department. The motorist, the vehicle, and two nearby homes were struck by gunfire.

The driver was OK after being grazed in the leg, investigators said.

A bystander said she was approached by the victim, who asked if she knew who had shot him.

"He came up to us, to talk, to see if we were the ones to shoot him, but we weren't," the witness said. "We told him it wasn't us, but we didn't know what direction it came from. So he just left."

After the shooter re-entered the home, a SWAT team responded to the scene and nearby residents were instructed to shelter in place. An hourslong barricade situation ensued.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m., police announced that a young girl had exited the residence and was safe. She is believed to be the suspect's daughter.

About 40 minutes later, several flashbang devices were deployed and the suspect was detained in the backyard of the residence.

"It really causes us to deal with a greater level of caution, and that's why the SWAT team is here, that's why negotiators are here," said police Sgt. Daron Wyatt. "Our goal is to get everybody out safely, with no use of force and no injuries to anybody involved. And that's what we've done."

The man in custody was identified only as a parolee at large.
