CHINATOWN, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Seven people were hospitalized early Saturday after a Chinatown crash involving two vehicles, one of which overturned.
A passenger in one of the cars later died as a result of the crash, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
The crash was reported at about 12:40 a.m. in the 500 block of North Broadway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
All seven passengers were taken to multiple hospitals, LAPD said.
Two of the seven patients suffered severe injuries, and another was listed in critical condition, an LAPD spokesperson said. Two of them were initially trapped; one was extricated by firefighters.
Three other patients were described as being in stable condition.
The collision occurred after the driver of a Dodge Ram ran a red light, LAPD said. It then struck a Honda Civic and overturned.
A male passenger in the Honda Civic died, according to investigators. They have not publicly identified him but his family said he was just 18 years old.
"He helped me through struggles, and I helped him through struggles. I always put him first and he always thought about me, putting me first," said the victim's brother. "It just hurts me so much."
The family shared a GoFundMe page with ABC7 to raise funds for the teen's funeral.
It was not immediately known how many people were in each vehicle.
News video from the scene showed two mangled vehicles. Crews used a crane to move the overturned car.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
