HOLLYWOOD -- At 95, June Squibb is showing us once again she is still a leading lady. She's starring in the new movie, "Eleanor the Great." Her director is often a leading lady herself: Scarlett Johansson.
In the film, Squibb plays an outspoken woman who moves back in with her daughter following the death of her dearest friend. In a nutshell, and in grief, Eleanor ends up doing something that has a domino effect on her life and the lives of those around her.
It's a role Squibb had been attached to take on for a few years.
"There's so much going on and so many beautiful scripts. This was wonderful. This was a script that the minute I read it, 'I'm doing it!' You know, I want this. That's it. I want things and I wanted this!" Squibb said.
And she was thrilled to get Johansson as her director.
"We just, we work so similarly," said Johansson. "Actually, it was sort of, like, we just had a shorthand between us."
"She knew where I was going all the time," said Squibb. "And I never had to say, 'Wait, don't...' you know. Nothing! I mean, she just knew where I was going," said Squibb.
"I was so curious to know what June Squibb wanted to star in and what was worth her time," said Johansson. "And, honestly, I have to say when I read the script, it was such an amazing showcase for both June's comedic talents, of course we know, but her dramatic talent, too. I mean, the character is - there's so much for her to express and discover and for us to discover with her."
"Eleanor The Great" is rated PG-13. It's new to theaters on Friday, Sept. 26.
