SoCal man fears fiancée detained by ICE could lose foot without surgery
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Christian Diaz says his fiancée, Karla Godoy, remains detained in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody while facing worsening health complications from a foot injury and diabetes.
Diaz said he and Godoy had been planning their future together before she was detained.
"We were planning to get married. Start our life. To see all that crashing down... it's a nightmare," Diaz said.
Diaz said he is fighting for Godoy's release and is increasingly concerned about her health. He shared photos showing injuries to the 24-year-old's leg, which he said have been worsened by diabetes and a fractured foot that has gone untreated for eight months.
"She doesn't even get a cast. It's just unbelievable what I'm seeing, what I have to see her go through," Diaz said. "If she doesn't get surgery on her foot, it's going to get to a point where it'll have to be amputated."
According to Diaz, Godoy is now confined to a wheelchair and unable to walk.
Godoy is being held at an ICE detention facility in Tacoma, Washington, after being detained during an immigration appointment in Los Angeles in November 2025.
Originally from El Salvador, Godoy arrived in Los Angeles in August 2024 on a tourist visa and later applied for asylum, citing political persecution.
"Couple months later we found out she had an Interpol red alert, which is clearly politically motivated," Diaz said. "Her dad used to be the attorney for [El Salvador President] Nayib Bukele."
According to Diaz, Godoy left El Salvador before the country's president imprisoned her mother and father on fraud allegations after her father discovered discrepancies in a case.
Diaz said Godoy fears for her safety if she is deported.
"Her fear is that if she's deported, that she'll be tortured, sexually assaulted, possibly even killed," he said.
Attorneys are appealing Godoy's deportation order and seeking her release so she can receive surgery for the fracture before she loses her limb, according to Diaz.
"If I do get her back, she's going to be in such an unhealthy state, possibly without her foot... It's just not right," he said.
Diaz said the facility has been treating Karla's wounds and giving her pain medication but has not done anything for the fracture.
Eyewitness News reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment and are waiting to hear back.
