Big Bear eagle Jackie remains critical, back in ICU after condition worsened overnight

OJAI, Calif. (KABC) -- The beloved Big Bear bald eagle Jackie remains in critical condition after suffering another medical setback overnight while receiving treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center, according to an update released Friday.

The eagle, identified by the center as Patient 26-519, continues to receive intensive care that includes oxygen therapy, supportive treatment and around-the-clock monitoring.

In the latest update, officials said Jackie's blood values have declined again.

"We wish we had better news to share today," the Ojai Raptor Center said in a statement.

"[Jackie's] blood values have declined again, with her packed cell volume (PCV) falling below 10%, and her condition remains critical," the center said.

The update follows news earlier this week that Jackie's PCV level had dropped to 13%, indicating her anemia had worsened.

The wildlife center said new diagnostic procedures have yielded important information as veterinarians continue trying to determine the cause of her illness.

"This week's contrast CT scan and bone marrow biopsy have provided important new information, while additional specialized testing remains pending," the center said. "Our veterinary team continues to work closely with specialists across the country as we evaluate these findings and determine the next steps in her care."

After Jackie was rescued, experts said she was anemic with inflammation affecting her kidneys. She previously received a life-saving blood transfusion from a fellow female eagle named Spirit, a resident at CALM Zoo in Bakersfield.

The Ojai Raptor Center said decisions regarding Jackie's treatment continue to be guided by her condition and well-being.

"We know how deeply so many of you care about this eagle, and we're so grateful for your continued patience, compassion, and support," the center said.

Jackie is one half of the well-known bald eagle pair featured on Friends of Big Bear Valley's (FOBBV) live nest camera alongside her mate, Shadow.

Officials said additional testing is still pending.

"We will continue to share meaningful updates as we learn more. Thank you for standing alongside us."

The couple's nest has been empty as of late. On Thursday, a subadult eagle, about 4 years old, was seen spending some time on the nest. As for the Big Bear eaglets that hatched earlier this year, they haven't been seen in days and it's possible they're gone for good.

"They can fly far and wide. So they can fly all the way up to Yellowstone or even Canada," said Jenny Voisard, spokesperson for Friends of Big Bear Valley.

Since mating season doesn't begin until the end of autumn, Jackie has some time to recover and officials say time is on their side.
