BIG BEAR, Calif. (KABC) -- The two eaglets of beloved Big Bear bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow have officially been named.

The chicks will be called Luna and Sandy, which is a nod to Sandy Steers, the former executive director of nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley who helped chronicle the lives of the bald eagles. Steers died in February.

On Friday, the nonprofit, which owns the live cameras near the eagles' nest, announced the eaglet's names that were chosen by local students.

Sandy was the most popular name entered with 3,706 of the 63,915 names submitted, the nonprofit said.

"Please know that although Sandy would not have wanted us to outright name one of the eaglets Sandy, she would have been honored that you and the students went through the process and named one of the 2026 eaglets after her."

The eaglets hatched over Easter weekend.
