Brush fire in Eagle Rock tears through home, injures LA firefighter
GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- A hillside home in Eagle Rock was largely destroyed by a fire Thursday afternoon that began in some brush then extended to the structure, injuring one firefighter.
The fire was reported around 2 p.m. near the northbound 2 Freeway, with flames burning about an acre of vegetation and advancing toward homes on Palmer Drive, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The California Highway Patrol shut down several lanes of the 2 Freeway in the area due to the fire. It was not immediately clear when they would reopen.
Video from AIR7 showed one home engulfed in flames in the 2800 block of Palmer Drive. Fire officials said everyone inside the home got out and were safe.
Personnel with the Los Angeles Fire Department and the L.A. Police Department evacuated some neighbors, but did not say how many. LAFD says some people got on their roofs to try and hose down the flames.
LAFD said crews coordinated "simultaneous structure defense and brush fire suppression. Specialty companies including LAFD Air Ops and Crew 4 are on scene." L.A. Park Rangers also helped with water tenders, the agency added.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries, according to LAFD, but did not provide specifics.
At about 3 p.m., LAFD announced that the brush fire's forward progress had been stopped and crews would transition to mop up and full containment operations.
The LADWP was requested to the scene to help with wires down in the area, according to LAFD.
The L.A. Department of Building & Safety will be conducting a structural assessment on the affected home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
