POMONA, Calif. (KABC) -- A driver who violently crashed while he was being chased by police in Pomona has died, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The chase started when San Bernardino County deputies in Victorville tried to pull over the driver for an unspecified vehicle code violation. The driver took off, traveling at a high rate of speed and eventually onto the southbound 15 Freeway.
It ended with the crash around 2 a.m. outside an apartment complex near Towne and Bonita avenues in Pomona, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A view from AIR7 showed a blue sedan that appeared to be partially wrapped around a palm tree. Debris was scattered across the street.
The suspect, only identified as a man in his 30s, died. His name has not been released. He was the only person in the car.
"Sometimes when we chase people, we have no idea why they're running. Ultimately, it turns out that there's some type of associate criminal activist that we're not aware of. In this case, we're still investigating that.," said CHP's Capt. Lance Burns.
