Chase suspect fires into air during standoff on 210 Fwy in Azusa

AZUSA, Calif. (KABC) -- A gunman was taken into custody Sunday morning after he opened fire during a chase and a standoff on the 210 Freeway in Azusa, authorities said.

The pursuit initially began when deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's San Dimas station encountered an armed suspect suspected of making criminal threats, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP took over the chase shortly after 1 a.m. at the northbound 605 Freeway at Ramona Boulevard, near Baldwin Park. The driver opened fire during the pursuit but no one was struck, authorities said.

The suspect stopped the pickup truck he was driving on the eastbound 210 Freeway at Citrus Avenue, prompting authorities to close the freeway and summon an armored vehicle to the scene.

The suspect was seen firing into the air and holding the gun to his head during the standoff. He was taken into custody without incident around 4:10 a.m. after he tossed the weapon, the Highway Patrol said. No injuries were reported.

All lanes were reopened to traffic after the standoff ended.
