The Chori-Man honors the past in San Pedro with fresh Mexican dishes

SAN PEDRO, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- More than a decade ago, Humberto Raygoza was selling his chorizo and burritos at farmers markets and restaurants.

Today, he and his family are proud owners of their own: The Chori-Man located in San Pedro.

"Cooking Mexican food, Mexican spices, Mexican dishes is phenomenal," Raygoza said.

He hails from Zacatecas, Mexico, and is known around town as the chori-man himself.

Raygoza specializes in making fresh Mexican chorizo, a pork sausage combining peppers and other spices, which he said is a staple in Mexican households.

"To make ends meet, my dad would make chorizo on the weekends," Raygoza said. "People would come to the apartment and knock on the door, and say 'Hey, can I buy a bag of chorizo?'"

Now, customers line the block to get a taste of The Chori-Man burritos. They sell hundreds every day.

The restaurant also serves chilaquiles, chori wings, chicken sandwiches and more.

"I've been living in San Pedro for 30-plus years, and he has brought a home cooked, delicious meal to this community instead of going to fast food joints," one loyal customer said. "Healthy, vegan options. Everything is delicious."

Despite being a meat shop, The Chori-Man serves plenty of vegan options so that everyone at your table can feel the love.

The soy chorizo, rice, beans and salsa are all vegan.

Devoted community members come from near and far to support this South Bay restaurant.

"They embraced us, and to this day we built such a foundation within the community," Raygoza said. "They support us in every way."

The Chori-Man offers chorizo-making classes and cooking classes. Head to their website for more info.

The Chori-Man is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is located at 2309 S Alma Street in Los Angeles.
