Deadly crash shuts down eastbound lanes of 10 Fwy in Palms

PALMS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- All eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway west of Robertson Boulevard were temporarily closed due to a fiery crash that left one person dead and two others hurt on Monday in Palms.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a two-car crash ended with a Toyota Prius fully engulfed in flames on the freeway shortly after 7 p.m. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A third patient was "reportedly detained on scene by bystanders" and taken to the hospital in unknown condition, according to LAFD.

It's unclear what exactly led up to the crash.

AIR7 video from above the scene shows the charred Prius on the freeway, with a traffic backup growing due to the road closure.

Drivers were being diverted off the eastbound 10 Freeway at Robertson Boulevard. Lanes eventually reopened around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
