Downey student asks questions of Pope Leo XIV at conference

INDIANAPOLIS (KABC) -- A 17-year-old high school student got to do something very few teenagers ever have before, at this year's National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis.

Ezequiel Ponce of Downey was one of five students given a chance to ask questions directly to Pope Leo XIV.

The students were seated at the center of the arena filled with thousands of other teenagers, with Pope Leo XIV appearing on screen via teleconference. A moderator invited Ponce to stand, gave him a microphone and allowed him to speak.

"To be honest, I was a little nervous," said Ponce. "Right before the Pope came on the screen and everyone started cheering, I immediately got goosebumps, and my heart was beating fast."

Ponce asked the Pope about the challenges facing students of his generation, especially those with mental and emotional struggles.

"Growing up in public school, I got to see my peers and myself struggle with faith," said Ponce in his question to the Pope. "Friends and family often say to just give my problems to the Lord. But how can I give my problems to God if he's close to me, even if I feel like this?"

Pope Leo XIV answered his question and allowed him a follow-up question as well.

"Many young people say no one understands me, but that thought can sometimes isolate you," answered Pope Leo XIV. "When it comes, try saying, Lord, you understand me better than I understand myself."

Ponce said when he was recently notified by email that he, along with four other students, was being given this opportunity, he could hardly believe it.

"I remember being in school, and reading the email, and my jaw dropped. It was the only thing I could think about, and I couldn't concentrate on school right. I just want to prepare and pack."

This is the first time the Pope has engaged in Q&A with students. In the past, he simply presented a video message.

"This opportunity itself, and him wanting to talk to teens, and the dialogue being as great as it was, it was amazing. And makes me excited for the future."
