How Dwayne Johnson pitched 'Moana' live-action companion album

"I pitched it, (and) I couldn't even finish the sentence before they went, 'We're in.'"

Not only is Disney's live-action "Moana" movie making a splash this summer, but so is the companion album, "Moana: Voices Across the Ocean."

The film's star, Dwayne Johnson, who is also the album's executive producer, revealed his wife, Lauren Hashian, came up with the project. "The whole idea of this album 'inspired by,' I'm going to embarrass Lauren, is it came from her and that's the truth. From 'Moana 1,' 10 years ago, she goes, 'A great idea: what if you guys did an adjacent album that was inspired by?'"

Two animated films and a live-action movie later, turned out to be the perfect time to create the album, especially after two successful albums from the biggest artists. "Beyoncé had her 'inspired by' album, 'Lion King.' Kendrick (Lamar) with 'Black Panther,'" Johnson shared.

Johnson explains going to dinner with Disney executives and they loved the suggestion, "I pitched it, (and) I couldn't even finish the sentence before they went, 'We're in. We love this idea and we want to illuminate your Polynesian culture and these artists.'"

How did "Moana: Voices Across the Ocean" get the album name? "For the title, you know, I think we came with 50 ideas, but the one thing that we could all agree on were these voices. They all have something different to share. So, we felt like the voice was really the most important thing to highlight," Hashian said.
