2 LA students awarded prestigious $20,000 scholarship

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Two Southern California high school seniors were awarded a prestigious $20,000 scholarship and honored as one of Coca-Cola's annual scholars.

Each year, only 150 students out of tens of thousands nationwide are chosen for this scholarship.

Andres Gonzalez, a student at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, and Axel Berganza, a Mendez High School student in Boyle Heights, were both selected for the scholarship.

Gonzalez will be attending Harvard University this upcoming fall, while Berganza will be headed to Stanford University. Berganza was an intern at Stanford's department of pathology. He's also the co-developer of a UCLA-affiliated mental health app serving underresourced communities.

Both students were recently in Atlanta, Georgia, to be recognized for this achievement as a Coca-Cola Scholar.
