Hurricane Marie brings high surf concerns for SoCal coastal communities

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- As preparations continue for the impacts of Hurricane Marie, residents near the Long Beach shoreline and other coastal cities say they are already noticing changes in local conditions.

Crews have built berms across the beach to help protect nearby homes and businesses from dangerous waves.

Although Hurricane Marie is not expected to make landfall in California, the region is expected to feel its effects with high surf, rip currents and possible rainfall.

A high surf advisory takes effect from 6 a.m. Saturday through 11 p.m. Tuesday. Neighbors are being advised to take additional precautions if they enter the water.

Conditions along the Long Beach shoreline on Thursday were relatively calm despite some wind, a contrast to conditions in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Residents are experiencing more direct effects from the storm.

Sandra Moreno, who is from Northern California and lives in Cabo, described severe weather conditions in the area.

"There's thunder, there's lightning. The rain is just pouring and the wind is so strong that the rains coming into the balcony," she said. "One of the small bridges got brushed out and so there's just a river of water just going through across the road."
