SAN PEDRO, Calif. (CNS) -- A 25-year-old man was in critical condition Saturday after he fell approximately 30 feet over a cliff in San Pedro, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

LAFD rescue crews were called at 11:06 p.m. Friday to 1 Point Fermin near the landslide and tourist area known as The Sunken City, where they reached the victim and began preparing for a hoist operation to attempt to rescue the man.

An LAFD helicopter hoisted and transported the patient directly to a local trauma center by air, said LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

It was not known how the man fell from the cliff.
