Latest Lexus ES model now comes as full EV version or as a hybrid
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- If you come across a 2026 Lexus ES sedan on the road, it'll definitely look much different than its predecessor. It may also sound different as well, emitting a faint whir.
That's because the new ES350e is fully electric, part of Lexus and parent company Toyota moving further into the EV space.
This four-door has been around for the full timeline of the Lexus brand, going all the way back to 1989. At debut, there were only two Lexus vehicles, both sedans. The large LS and mid-size ES got the brand started as 1990 models. With this year's discontinuation of the LS, the ES is now the only Lexus model that's been around from the beginning.
As an electric, the ES350e wants for nothing. While the bold exterior styling might not be to everyone's liking, the roomy interior is both inviting and functional. And with no gasoline engine making even the slightest ruckus, it's very quiet. Driving range is estimated at up to 307 miles, and it's compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network. Prices start at $50,190 including destination.
The automotive space is wall-to-wall SUVs these days, and people seeking out a sedan tend to be more pragmatic. That's probably also true for Lexus ES buyers; dealerships do see a lot of repeat customers. But those same buyers may be reluctant to switch to a full EV. And Lexus knows this.
For those who still prefer internal combustion, the other choice for the new ES is a gas-electric hybrid, something Lexus has been doing since 2012, but previously as an option. Now the ES350h is your only option if you want a Lexus sedan that runs on more conventional power. Prices start at $52,490.
Offering this choice is a smart move by Lexus, as hybrids are gaining in popularity overall for people not yet ready for a full EV.
A survey by the Pew Research Center earlier this year showed that overall, 44% of American buyers would strongly consider a hybrid, whereas only 32% would strongly consider a full EV for their next purchase.
For those who are in the market for something fully electric, Lexus has bolstered its offerings. The RZ model, a battery powered two-row EV, got some updates for 2026, and a Lexus three-row EV is coming soon.
And now, the ES can run gas-free as well if you like. It's carrying a lot of legacy in its name, helping carry the diminished Lexus sedan segment, and powered by what's often seen as the eventual future of vehicle propulsion.
