Burglary suspects abandon U-Haul, crash in getaway car during LA chase
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A group of burglary suspects led police on an erratic chase across the greater Los Angeles area Wednesday, abandoning a U-Haul and then crashing in a separate getaway car.
The series of events started around 4:40 a.m. at a smoke and marijuana warehouse on E. 32nd Street in South L.A. The Los Angeles Police Department says four to five suspects wearing ski masks were loading marijuana products into the U-Haul.
When officers moved in the driver took off, dumping the suspected stolen marijuana products across the road.
About 20 minutes later, two suspects got out and abandoned the U-Haul near Randy's Donuts on Manchester Boulevard.
They were picked up by a waiting getaway car, a dark sedan, that continued to evade police in the LAX area, reaching high speeds on surface streets and the 405 Freeway.
During the chase, two suspects jumped out of the car in different areas, but the driver kept going.
The suspect eventually made their way to the South L.A. area, making dangerous turns with its headlights turned off and nearly hitting early morning drivers.
The pursuit came to an end in the Hyde Park area as the suspect drove into the intersection of Arlington Avenue and 48th Street. That's when another car hit the suspect, causing him to spin out.
One person ran from the car and into the surrounding neighborhood, triggering a search.
The LAPD says two people have since been detained in connection to the burglary and chase. At least one more suspect remains outstanding.
