Woman in custody after bizarre standoff at Malibu mansion

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman accused of hurling objects at beachgoers and possibly trying to hit some of them with a bow and arrow is in custody after a nine-hour standoff at a beachfront mansion in Malibu on Wednesday.

The standoff with the woman stretched through most of the day. Many neighbors say weren't surprised as this wasn't the first time they had witnessed strange behavior.

The woman threw her belongings out on the sand, screaming and threatening those passing by.

"There's a woman who was not happy with the dogs that we sometimes have on the beach," neighbor Larry May said. "She was shooting arrows at people."

Two people were shot at, but they weren't struck, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The incident began just before 11 a.m. when the 68-year-old woman refused to come out of the house. Investigators say she is known to deputies.

One neighbor said she saw a similar scene just days before.

"This woman was screaming all kinds of obscenities, and then she started throwing all kinds of objects that she had inside the house," neighbor Carolina Cohen said.

The Sheriff's Department shut down the popular stretch of Malibu Road as they tried to get the woman to give up. After several hours, the 68-year-old was finally taken into custody and taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Neighbors say it was clear something wasn't right.

The Sheriff's Department says the woman was taken in for a medical and mental evaluation as they work to determine if she will be booked into jail or taken to another facility.
