LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- With nearly a million people in Los Angeles using the Metro system every day, keeping them all safe can be an overwhelming challenge.
To kick off Rail Safety Month, Metro teamed up with Metrolink and Amtrak to host a pop-up event at Union Station. Riders were able learn about ways to stay safe around trains.
"We want to encourage everyone to observe safe behaviors around the tracks," said Edith Burge with the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The safety initiative comes at a time when Metro is seeing a drop in crime. Metro leaders said violent crime has dropped nearly 30% compared to last year.
Earlier this year, there were two stabbings at Metro stations. One happened at the North Hollywood station where a security guard was stabbed and another at the Universal City location.
Some Metro riders who spoke with Eyewitness News on Thursday said they generally feel safe when riding the trains, while others said they sometimes feel uneasy.
Overall, Thursday's pop-up was to spread awareness on rider safety.
