Orphaned bear cubs receiving care after mother euthanized

MONROVIA, Calif. (KABC) -- The two orphaned cubs of a mother bear in Monrovia who was euthanized last week are now on the road to rehabilitation.

The cubs, who are believed to be around 3 months old, are in the care of the San Diego Humane Society's Wildlife Center in Ramona. That's where they'll stay until they're big enough to head back into the wild.

Workers at the wildlife center have been wearing bear suits and even mimicking the cubs' mother in an effort to keep the cubs from bonding with humans.

Their mother was euthanized last week after being linked by DNA to two incidents and deemed a public threat.

The city of Monrovia says a female bear that took a swipe at a woman over the weekend has been euthanized. DNA revealed this wasn't the bear's first attack.

In one of those incidents, the female bear took a swipe at a woman while she was walking her dog in Monrovia.

The female bear and her two cubs were captured the day after. The cubs weren't around at the time of the attack because they were in a den underneath a nearby home, officials said.
