Man barricaded in Arleta home for hours, forcing school closure

ARLETA, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man who allegedly threatened to shoot a family member barricaded himself inside a home in Arleta for several hours, prompting the closure of a nearby LAUSD school Monday.

Officers responded to the home on Gruen Street near Beachy Avenue Elementary School after 1 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man remained barricaded inside the home with multiple weapons, including an AR style rifle, for most of the morning. He was taken into custody several hours later around noon.

"Right now, it's ongoing. It's a fluid situation," said Officer Charles Miller. "... There are dangers, which is why we've evacuated the neighbors. It does take time to formulate a plan and try to get the suspect into custody."

The 40-year-old suspect was hospitalized for a drug overdose Sunday and went to his family's home after he was discharged, police said.

That's when he threatened to shoot a family member with a pistol. His family was able to evacuate the home unharmed, but he stood inside.

Due to the ongoing police activity, Beachy Avenue Elementary redirected its students and staff to Canterbury Avenue Elementary School.

"The Beachy Elementary School campus will be closed until further notice," an LAUSD spokesperson said in a statement. "However, our teachers and support staff will be available at Canterbury Elementary School to support your student's instructional needs. We will also have school mental health on site to support."
